Philosophy
The caregiver system and the client system are complementary in nature and should never be looked at in isolation of each other. An impact on one system—positively or negatively—directly impacts the other. To fail with one system means we risk failing with both. Conversely when we succeed with one system, we increase our likelihood of succeeding with the other. Villa understands this concept and has long been an advocate and educator as to the needs of the caregiver. It is precisely this premise that led to the “Care for Caregivers” (CFC) Project.
Older adults who find themselves in the caregiver position—whether caring for an adult child with a developmental disability or a frail spouse—face intense difficulties as they cope with their daily responsibilities. Failure to recognize the stress that they are under and receive adequate education and support can lead to fatigue, illness, depression and burnout.
Once this occurs the social service system is then faced with not only caring for the caregiver but for the care recipient as well. Given this interdependent relationship it is critical to take a preventative approach and provide outreach, education and support to the caregiver.
Eligibility
The CFC Project targets two principal groups of caregivers: caregivers of adult children with developmental disabilities or frail elderly, and seniors over 60 caring for younger relatives. Currently the program is offered in Thousand Oaks, Moorpark and Simi Valley.
